The Two Resurrections

John 5:28-29

Verse 29 Marvel not at this—at what?

Verse 25 The dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, etc.

Examples Physically dead.

1. Jairus’ daughter.

2. Widow of Nain’s Son. See Verse 21.

3. Lazarus.

This could also mean the spiritually dead. Christ is ushering in the new dispensation in which eternal life is only to be found in Himself.

Verse 26 As the Father is self-existent in Himself, so also is the Son.

Verse27 All authority has been given to Him by God the Father.

All judgment has been committed to Him. See Verse 22. Acts 17:31.

He is Very God.

He is Lord of Life and Death.

He is Judge of all.

Do not wonder nor be surprised at this.

Verse 28 The Lord explains the two resurrections. Note the different phraseology from Verse 25.

The hour is coming—Yet future—when all who are in the grave shall Hear the Lord’s voice, and shall come forth.

This is a statement of an absolute certainty—The physical resurrection.

All shall hear—and come forth.

Please note that it is in two parts.

1. They that have done good—unto the Resurrection of life.

2. They that have done evil—unto the Resurrection of Judgment.

A. Resurrection of Life.

1 Thessalonians 4. The Rapture.

Hear the voice—The shout.

B. Resurrection of Judgment.

Revelations 20:5. The rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished.

Read Revelations 20:11-15 The Great White Throne. The result—Eternal death.

Verse 30 “I can do nothing of myself,” denote the Oneness with the Father. I and my Father are One. John 10:30.

Verse 31 Bearing witness of Himself would be unscriptural, so He calls other witnesses.

(1) The Witness

John the Baptist Verse 33-35

John 1:29 Behold the Lamb of God.

Verse 34 The Son of God.

(2) The Miracles or Signs

John never performed a miracle that was recorded—yet they accepted him.

The Lord, many miracles. Up to this point:

The cleansing of the Temple.

Turning water into wine.

Nobleman’s son healed.

The impotent man healed.

The works bear witness of me.

Quote John 20:31 But these are written etc.

(3) The Father Bears Witness 37-38

Matthew 3:16-17.

John 12:28-30.

Luke 9:27-36.

(4) The O.T. Scriptures Bear Witness 39

They testify to Me.

Hebrews 10:7 In the volume of the book it is written of Me.

What book? The Old Testament

What Person? Jesus Christ

His Virgin Birth. Isaiah 7:14; 9:6.

The Perfect Servant. Isaiah 42.

His Sinless life.

His Atoning Sacrifice. Isaiah 53.

John 1:45 We have found Him of whom Moses in the law and the prophets spoke.

Ye search the Scriptures etc.

Verse 40 Ye will not come unto Me, that ye might have life.

After hearing the testimony of these witnesses, they still refused to come to Him, they refused to believe in Him.

1. These men were spiritually blind—dead.

2. They were adamant in their rejection of Him.

3. They absolutely refused the testimony of

    A. John the Baptist

    B. The miracles

    C. The father

    D. The Scriptures.

Luke 12:54-56 Ye hypocrites etc. Apply this.
