Defensive forces are ever aware of the possibility of stealthful infiltration by the enemy. They, consequently, are always alert lest secretly the foe enter their ranks; there to sabotage their position and very existence. Under such provocative circumstance, a defective guard would be fatal.

In the face of open opposition in the first Christian century, the Apostle Paul stated, “I am set for the defence of the gospel” (Phil. 1:17). In a less conspicuous role God has raised up throughout the intervening centuries those who have been the defenders of the Christian faith.

While today open opposition is not as prevalent, the tactical enemy still seeks to destroy “the faith which was once delivered unto the saints,” and this by infiltration.

Materialism has already weakened the testimony of the Lord. It has diverted hearts from Christ, and in some cases has resulted in grief and remorse. How true the Word of God is! “The love of money is the root of all evil; which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows” (1 Tim. 6:10).

Cold intellectualism with its pride and a philosophy that elevates human intellect to a place of supremacy, has spoiled many a happy, useful Christian life. A rationality that questions the authority, not to say the veracity, of the Scriptures is characterized by pride. “Pride draws only to itself, but unlike the magnet, it has no attractive pole.”

Long ago Addison wrote, “Modesty is not only an ornament, but also a guard to virtue.” A lack of this charm has led some to ignore the doctrine of divine headship (1 Cor. 11:1-15), and to expose themselves to divine discipline and human contempt.

Let us beware of infiltration by the enemy. Let us in our character and conduct be the defenders of the high and holy standards of our Christian heritage.
