Lesson 6 Attaining Life Goals (Part II)

After having completed the “Goal Planning Worksheet” and the “Time Inventory” worksheet in Lesson 4, you are ready to write your short-range goals and to complete a weekly schedule. You should review the NOTES for Lesson 4 before doing the exercises below.

1. Short-Range Goals. You have reviewed various areas of your life with your leader and before the Lord.

a. Select three goals from your “Goal Planning Worksheet” that you wish to pursue during the next few months. These goals should be challenging and should contribute to a disciplined, victorious Christian life. If you only had six months to live, what goals would you pursue?

b. Record your goals and the activities needed to achieve them by answering the questions on the “Goals and Activities” worksheet.

2. Weekly Schedule. Having analyzed your present use of time and established your short range goals (Lesson 4), complete a weekly schedule that will ensure that all necessary activities are done. Take the following steps:

a. Consider the areas of responsibility listed on the “Schedule Planning Worksheet.” For each area, write down all the activities you are presently doing and all activities you must do to achieve your short range goals.

b. Estimate the time required for each activity and record it under “Time Needed.” Total.

c. Assign priorities for your activities. Mark the “must do” activities by “A.” These include routine activities over which you have no choice (sleep, work, etc.) and the activities related to your goals. Mark “should do” activities by “B” and “can-do” or low value activities by “C.”

d. Fill in the “Weekly Schedule” recording the “A” activities first, then the “B” activities and finally the “C” activities. The “C” and “B” priority activities may have to be eliminated or adjust to fit the 168-hour week.

3. Optional. It would be worthwhile to complete a “Goal Planning Worksheet” for Intermediate, Long-Range and Life Goals.

a. Start with Life Goals first. (See Lesson 4 under “Developing Goals.”)

b. Long-Range Goals should include subgoals that will help you meet the Life Goals.

c. Intermediate Goals should help you achieve the Long-Range goals.

d. You may now have to adjust your Short-Range goals to ensure that you can meet the Intermediate Goals.

4. Check-Up and Review. Ask for help from your leader when needed. Adjust your goals and time schedule as necessary. Have someone review you periodically on your progress.
