Song of
Solomon Chapter 1:12-14
“
While the King is at his table My spikenard
sends forth its fragrance.
A bundle of
myrrh is my beloved to me.
That lies
all night between my breasts.
My
beloved is to me a cluster of henna blooms in the vineyards of En Gedi.”
A bundle
of myrrh is my beloved to me.
Myrrh is
a gum resin that when distilled gives off a pleasant aroma.
It was a common but costly perfume.
When we think of myrrh in relationship to
our beloved, we find myrrh mentioned three times only in the New
Testament.
Once at the beginning of our
Lord’s life when the magi bring it to the new born king as a token of their
worship.
(Mat 2:11)
Once at the death of our Lord when he was
offered it mixed with wine as an anesthetic, which He refused to drink.
(Mark 15:23)
Then lastly at His burial, as Nicodemus brings a mixture of myrrh
and alones to wrap the body of the Lord Jesus.
So, myrrh was present, we may say at the beginning of our Lords life,
and at the end.
So, it could picture
to us the fragrance of that life which was lived upon this world’s stage.
His life,
death, burial and resurrection are things so valued by us as His children.
The thought of these things “lies all night”
close to our hearts.
Our beloved is to
us a bundle of myrrh that lies between our breasts, and its fragrance is always
with us and cannot be forgotten.
How
often have you awakened in the morning with a song of praise resonating in your
mind, as through the night the Lord has placed a song in your heart.
The fragrance of that wonderful person lies
close to our inner most being.
Our
beloved Lord Jesus is also to us “
a
cluster of henna blooms”.
Henna
comes from a word which means “the price of a life”.
It is the word Kopher, from which we get the word Kipor, as in
Yon Kipor or the day of atonement.
It
has the idea of a covering or that which covers.
Our Lord
Jesus Christ is to us who know Him our cover.
The psalmist in Psalm 84:9 says, “
O
God, behold our shield, and look upon the face of your anointed”
It is a wonderful truth for us as those
saved by His matchless grace to know that He shields us.
We are IN Christ Jesus our Lord, and His
precious blood shields us from the wrath of God.
Our sins, have been forgiven and we are covered by the
blood.
O God, look upon Him and we
shall be safely hidden in Him.
“Look
upon the face of your anointed, (your beloved Son, in whom you are well
pleased)” and we shall be safe.
“Our
Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into Him and are safe”. The psalmist
says in Psalm 144:2, “My goodness, and my fortress, my high tower, and my
deliverer, my shield, and in whom I trust…”
“Jesus I
am resting resting in the joy of what thou art, I am finding out the greatness
of thy loving heart.”
