Jonathan Edwards The Preacher — Ralph G. Tumbull, Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Mich.

This is more than a biography of an eminent Puritan preacher, it is an analysis of his personality as this was manifest in his Christian service. Furthermore, it is an analysis of his style of preaching and his method of writing.

Although Edwards lived in the 18th century, he presents to the servant of Christ today, a real challenge in the pathway of duty and diligence.

He sought to serve his own generation with true conformity to the divine light he had received. He worked incessantly, studied carefully, preached earnestly, and wrote thoughtfully.

Edwards possibly is best known today by his sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” His doctrinal sermon, “The Sovereignty of God” (Rom. 9:18), should be perused by gospel preachers of this day. This is a rebuke to the shallow thinking of our generation.
