Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. Psalm 48:1
In 1715, King Louis XIV of France died after a reign of 72 years. He called himself “the Great”, having made the famous statement, “I am the state”! His court was the most magnificent in Europe and his funeral equally spectacular. As his body lay in state in a golden coffin, a solitary candle was set above it to dramatize his greatness. While thousands waited in hushed silence at the memorial service, Bishop Massilon began to speak. Slowly reaching down, he snuffed out the candle and said, “Only God is great”. Indeed, how true! Only God is great. Let us celebrate His greatness daily. -Ross Rainey
