The Unchanging Christ

Arthur F. Wilder

“Jesus Christ (is) the same yesterday, and today, and forever” (Heb. 13:8).

The New Year will find the world facing the same old problems of man’s inhumanity to man and his disobedience to God. But our future is in His hands and we need not fear the darkness, for the Lord of Glory will lead us Home to light and glory in His presence. Our simple duty is to seek to do His will, following wherever He leads, for our future is assured by the unchanging Person of our Lord Jesus Christ.

As His existence is eternal, so are His moral glories. Although He came to live among sinful men and women in the likeness of sinful flesh, He never surrendered His deity. In His years of humiliation as the suffering Servant, He was always the same in His mercy, love, compassion and grace. Even as He hung upon the Cross, He freely forgave those who had placed Him there, pardoning their ignorance. Many others felt His mercy and compassion in His earthly ministry. Blind men received their sight, a widow was comforted, a sick man’s sins were forgiven, and Lazarus was raised from the dead.

We waiver in our faith and in our obedience to His commands, but our blessed Lord never varies in His mercy toward us. In the year to come we need such a source of strength and wisdom which is constant in its power in times of rebellion, hatred, and turmoil. We need the guiding hand of One who is always the same in His compassion on the ignorant and who never fails to keep His promises.

In the life of our Lord, yesterday has no beginning and tomorrow has no ending. Today and throughout eternity He lives co-equal, co-eternal and coexistent with His Father God.

“I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore” (Rev. 1:18).
